In this sermon, Jessica Morthorpe of Kippax Uniting Church and the Five Leaf Eco Awards, talks about creation and praise - about how all creatures join in a litany of praise of God, and the imperative I think it gives to care for creation and for our endangered species. It was delivered at Springwood Uniting Church in the Blue Mountains on Palm Sunday 2011, on the occasion of the presentation of their Five Leaf Eco-Awards Basic Certificate.
Jessica Morthorpe of Kippax Uniting Church and the Five Leaf Eco Awards reflects on 1 Samuel 16:1-13, and talks about "what can one person do?" in the face of ecological crisis. The talk was first given at George’s Uniting Church in Eden on the 3rd of April 2011. St George's holds the most Five Leaf Eco Awards of any church in Australia - and so the main aim of the talk was not to inform or persuade, but to encourage. Jessica now shares this talk in the hope that it might be an encouragement to other churches and Christians caring for God's creation. You are all heroes!
Board of Mission staff Ross Neville (Rural Evangelism and Mission Consultant), Kel Hodge (Rural Chaplain) and Julie Greig (Rural Chaplain) appeared before the Windsor Inquiry into the Murray Darling Basin Plan in March. Ross, Kel and Julie have now made a follow-up submission, drawing upon discussions held at more than a dozen locations across the Synod. Their submission makes the following recommendations for the Murray Darling Basin Plan process: - Change needs to be with real consultation and include local wisdom - There needs to be a consensual process to help communities find new ways of being - There has to be long term certainty for those using the water including irrigators and communities - The whole Australian community, and not just those living in the basin area, needs to share “the pain” of fixing the problem - Australia needs a long term food policy

"Urban Food Maps provide the connections between produce and people. Population explosions, increasing density of urban areas and dependence on large-scale agribusiness and petroleum are all major factors affecting the current food system. By mapping where food is grown in urban areas and encouraging the simple act of sharing (meaning taking some and giving some) an alternative food system will be supported that will lighten these pressures and dependencies."
