Lenten Resources for 2011

We are now entering the Season of Lent, the 40 day period of the Christian liturgical year leading up to Easter, and which many of us observe as a period of prayer, fasting and/or giving something up.

Many of you would be aware of “Lent Event” (see http://www.lentevent.com).  To participate in Lent Event, you:

  • Give something up for Lent
  • Put the money that you are saving aside
  • Do daily study and prayer
  • Send in your savings to Lent Event, which has partnered up with UnitingWorld to support development projects in over twenty countries.

Lent Event is about choosing to consume less so that we can give others more.  This can also have a strong environmental focus.  For some ideas on appreciating creation and reducing your footprint for Lent, see:

  • Biblical reflections on the theme “Water and Just Peace” from World Council of Church's Ecumenical Water Network. These resources explore the connection between access to water, struggles over this precious resource and building just peace.  Worship materials for World Water Day on 22 March and Maunday Thursday are also available here.
  • The Presbyterian Church (USA) Environmental Ministries Lenten Eco-Justice Calendar, a resource to help you learn about and take action on the issues of waste, energy, water, consumption and food.
  • Tear Australia's Carbon Fast resource.
  • Micah Challenge's "40 Day Fast" resource (PDF, 2.8MB)
